Taupō Hospital has more than double the number of Senior Medical Officers it had just over a year ago. 

In July 2025, Health New Zealand confirmed it had just 3.3 of nine senior positions filled at the hospital. 

Taupō Hospital Clinical Lead Dr Ralston D’Souza says they are now at 6.9 full-time equivalent senior medical officers “and due to be fully staffed for SMOs by early 2027”. 

A Taupō man who has been battling one of the most aggressive forms of prostate cancer is now hoping to establish the town's first support group for men with the disease. 

Michael Lintott was diagnosed after a routine PSA blood test revealed a sudden spike. The isolation he felt throughout his cancer journey is what's driving him to get the group off the ground.

Last week’s fire at the Broadlands Road Geothermal Reserve has dealt a blow to a sensitive ecological area. 

Taupō ecologist Alana Delich says the area affected by the fire is a critically endangered ecosystem because of the unique geothermal landscape. 

“Here are living things growing somewhere that's hot, acidic, no nutrients, like the most difficult place to survive.”
